Consultation on the potential impact of Brexit on the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands Government wants to hear your views on how the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, commonly called 'Brexit' might impact the Cayman Islands.

During the Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) Summit in November 2016 the Leaders of the Overseas Territories and the United Kingdom Government committed to future engagement on the UK's exit from the European Union (EU) through the creation of the UK-Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council on European Negotiations (JMC-OT EN).

The JMC-OT EN is scheduled to meet during the first week of February 2017. This special JMC meeting is our first opportunity to formally present the UK with our position in relation to the UK's exit from the EU.

Therefore, in preparation for this meeting the Cabinet Office and wider Government has been considering various maters, including the following:

  1. The current benefits that the Cayman Islands receives due to the UK being a member of the EU (including the European Development Fund and other horizontal funds, freedom of movement and borders, access to the EU Single Market, memberships to organisations, etc);
  2. The implications (legal, policy, economic, commercial, social, etc.) for the Cayman Islands as a result of the UK leaving the EU;
  3. The opportunities (legal, policy, economic, commercial, social, etc.) for the Cayman Islands as a result of the UK leaving the EU;
  4. How Brexit might impact Caymanians personally (for example travel or studying abroad).

In addition to consideration by Government, the Cabinet Office is inviting the public to share with us their thoughts on the impact of the UK's exit from the EU on the Cayman Islands. Whether on the above issues or other matters.

This is an initial consultation. Therefore following the JMC-OT EN meeting in February, and the United Kingdom triggering Article 50, the public will be able to provide further views as the negotiations between the UK and the EU progress.
