On Sunday (9th November 2015) the Cayman Islands will celebrate Remembrance Sunday with simultaneous ceremonies on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

A religious service will begin at 10:45 a.m. at Elmslie Memorial Church, in front of the Cenotaph, on Grand Cayman. Meanwhile on Cayman Brac, the Remembrance Day Service will take place in front of the War Memorial Cenotaph in Stake Bay.

Her Excellency the Governor, Helen Kilpatrick, Cabinet ministers and members; members of the Legislative Assembly; and clergy are among those confirmed to attend the service.

As is customary, the event will begin with a parade of uniformed services and community organisations led by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) and Band. Also taking part will be the Cayman Islands Veterans Association; the Fire Service; the Prison Service; Girls Brigade; Scouts; Cadet Corps;  Pathfinders; the Lions Club of Grand Cayman; and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens. Veterans Association members will collect an offering during the service.

The Veterans and Seamen's Society of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman will also collect an offertory at the Cayman Brac service, which will follow a very similar format. Among those expected to be present are: the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Hon. Julianna O’ Connor-Connolly and Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell.

Later next week, on Wednesday, 11 November, at 11.00 am, the Cayman Islands will then join the international community in observing Remembrance Day with a two minute silence.

This brief observance marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War, and remembers all military personnel who have fallen since. The Remembrance Sunday religious services that also mark the occasion are traditionally held on the first Sunday in November and, in the Cayman Islands also recall all those lost at sea.

During this time local residents are also encouraged to donate funds to the Cayman Islands Veterans Association. In return for their donation they will receive a poppy, which symbolise the blood of the fallen. The flowers are available from the reception area of the Government Administration Building as well as from members of the Veterans’ Association.
